Diabetes is a chronic illness that requires continuing medical care and ongoing patient self-management education and support to prevent acute complications and to reduce the risk of long-term complications. Diabetes care is complex and requires that many issues, beyond glycemic control, be addressed. A large body of evidence exists that supports a range of interventions to improve diabetes.Polygenic Risk Variants for Type 2 Diabetes Susceptibility Modify Age at Diagnosis in Monogenic HNF1A Diabetes Hana Lango Allen , Stefan Johansson , Sian Ellard , Beverley Shields , Jens K. Protection against dental caries is an indispensable tool for research on PD using diabetic animals, and caries inhibition by fluoride treatment is a simple but effective tool for this type of research. In conclusion, long-term hyperglycemia naturally induces dental caries but not PD in the studied type 1 and type 2 diabetic rodents.Immunotherapy trials in recent-onset type 1 diabetes (T1D) have had mixed results, with some therapies—anti-CD3 monoclonal antibodies targeting T cells (1–7), anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies targeting B cells (8), and costimulation blockade (9)—showing promise, with at least transient improvement in β-cell function compared with randomized control groups.

While both common types of diabetes are characterized by sustained elevations of plasma glucose levels, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that results in complete loss of the insulin-producing β-cells in the pancreatic islets, while type 2 diabetes (T2D) typically results when insulin secretion from the islets fails.© 2019 by the American Diabetes Association.
